The leading militant group operating in the oil rich region of southern Nigeria, the Niger Delta Avengers, has written an open letter to Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari accusing him on planning genocide in the Niger Delta.
The Delta Avengers reminded the president that they have ceased hostilities and offered to dialogue and were waiting on the Nigerian government to put talks in motion. Hence, the group wondered why Buhari would threaten them in Kenya saying, “We will deal with them as we dealt with Boko Haram if they refuse to talk to us.”
The letter, published on Avengers’ website on Monday, August 29, 2016, warned President Buhari of the consequences of genocide in the Niger Delta, saying that “the world will applaud you at The Hague”.
This letter comes on the heels of Buhari threatening to deal with the militants in the region as he dealt with Boko Haram at the Tokyo conference on African development in Kenya over the weekend. “We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to put away the garb of a stooge to the imperialists, whenever he speaks outside Nigeria,” the militants said.
The militants advised the president to emulate developed countries that he appears to be beholden to. “Dear president, what makes those countries (Japan, Germany, France, USA, Britain etc.) great is the ability of their governments to accommodate internal protestations and conflicts for the greater good of their nations over the years,” the letter said
